AWS API Gateway pricing : 2026 reference
AWS API Gateway HTTP, REST, WebSocket per-million-request rates, caching tiers, private API and VPC link cost mechanics. Verified June 2026.

Per-call structure
HTTP API is the cheaper and recommended default for new builds. REST API remains the right choice when you need request validation, API keys with usage plans, AWS WAF integration in the REST style, or canary deployments via stage variables.
Tiered volume discounts apply at the published bands. Past one billion requests per month the per-million rate falls; private agreements and EDP discounts go further. We do not infer the EDP discount level because AWS publishes only the list rate.
Caching cost mechanics
Caching is provisioned per stage. A 1.6 GB cache lists at $0.038 per hour, about $28 per month per stage. With four stages across non-prod and prod, a 1.6 GB cache adds roughly $112 per month. Cache reduces origin-hitting calls but does not reduce the per-million-request fee on API Gateway itself.
Cache TTL is per-method and per-stage. Cache invalidation costs are not separately billed.
Egress and data-transfer
Data out from API Gateway to the internet is billed at standard AWS data-transfer rates, currently $0.09 per GB for the first 10 TB per month after the first 100 GB free. Cross-region replication costs additional cross-region transfer.
Private API + VPC link adds NLB hours and PrivateLink endpoint hours that are not part of the API Gateway line.
Recent change
API Gateway Portals now carry a published price: $125 per month per Portal, including 10 PortalProducts of up to 40 ProductRestEndpoints each, with additional PortalProducts at $12.50 per month. Portal and PortalProduct charges are prorated by usage within the month. The July 2025 Free Tier change still stands: new AWS customers receive up to $200 in credits applicable to API Gateway, on a 6-month free plan inside a 12-month credit window.

REST API list price is $3.50 per million requests for the first 333M/month, $2.80 for the next 667M and $2.38 above 1B. HTTP API is cheaper and the recommended default for new builds, and is metered in 512 KB increments. WebSocket is $1.00 per million messages plus $0.25 per million connection-minutes. Caching is a separate hourly line by cache size: $0.020/hr at 0.5 GB, $0.038 at 1.6 GB, $0.20 at 6.05 GB, $0.25 at 13.5 GB, $0.50 at 28.4 GB, $1.00 at 58.2 GB, $1.90 at 118 GB and $3.80 at 237 GB (US East (N. Virginia); confirmed against the AWS Price List API).
